Artist's Statement

My art is based upon openings.  It arrives when my internal and external defenses are
lowered and I allow the world to penetrate me.

My paintings and drawings are conscious manifestations of tangible interactions and
emotions coupled with unconscious desires and dreams.  My artwork is a visual diary of
moments of permeability.  It exists because I am willing to face my internal struggles and
take a painted journey to my personal truth.

The work is raw, unscripted and dangerous.  It requires me to tread the shores of death,
despair and turmoil and often leaves me at sea – with no rescue in sight.  I paint myself
into perils unknown and must solve my dilemmas with intuition and honesty.

My marks describe moments.  The slashes, scribbles, and scumbles vary with the
message I convey.  They are assured, tentative, bold and beautiful.  Only if I am able to
paint with abandonment to the moment – to let go of all ego – the work succeeds.

My surfaces are lush with color and texture.  They exhibit my process through layers of
paint and destroyed passages of previous sojourns.

I offer my private artwork for public view to catalyze a dialogue.  I display my true foibles
and fears, defeats and desires to expose what is most human.  If I can permit myself to
“just be” on the canvas, I might reach across the existential void of loneness and connect
with another.  This is the greatest gift of making art.
